The Effects of Pedestrian Environments on Walking Behaviors and Perception of Pedestrian Safety

We investigated the effects of pedestrian environments on parents’ walking behavior, their perception safety, and willingness to let children walk school. This study was a simulated environment experiment that created six different conditions using sidewalks, landscape buffers, street trees. used within subjects design where participants were exposed all conditions. Participants 26 parents with elementary school children. Sidewalks, buffer strips, trees affected decisions to: themselves; school; evaluate whether safe for walking. found does affect people’s perceptions safety walk. The presence sidewalk, strip, decision walk, perceived as safer are greater when there is wide rather than narrow buffer. It more cautious about children’s own.
